Which Injectables Should I Use for My Wrinkles?

Posted on: June 21st, 2023 by Dr. Christopher Crosby

The popularity of cosmetic injectable treatments is no secret: they are a quick and easy way to minimize unwanted lines and wrinkles that age your appearance. If you are interested in trying out injectables, you may be wondering which brand is right for facial rejuvenation. The answer to that depends on a few factors. In this blog, the professionals at Grossmont Dermatology Medical Clinic offer their guidance in choosing the best injectables for your face.

The Two Primary Types of Injectables

Dermal fillers: Most dermal fillers, like Juvéderm and Restylane, use hyaluronic acid to add volume to areas of volume loss.. This softens your features and fills in unwanted lines and wrinkles. Some other dermal fillers, like Sculptra, use poly-L-lactic acid to stimulate new collagen production to produce a similar volumizing effect.

Neuromodulators: The best-known neuromodulator is Botox.

Consider the Location of Your Wrinkles

Botox is effective on the lines created by muscle movements, most of which exist at the top of the face, including frown lines (vertical lines between the eyebrows), horizontal forehead lines, and crow’s feet at the outer corner of the eyes. In contrast, dermal fillers are primarily used on the mid-to-lower portion of the face where volume loss is most likely to occur, such as the cheeks, marionette lines, and nasolabial folds.

How Deep Are Your Wrinkles?

Sometimes the right injectable choice depends on the severity of your lines and wrinkles. In the dermal filler category of injectables, Restylane may be indicated for mild wrinkles, Juvéderm tackles moderate wrinkles well, and Sculptra can take on the deepest wrinkles and volume loss. Some forms of HA-based fillers like Restylane Defyne and Juvéderm Voluma XC can also handle deeper-set lines.

Botox is successful at treating moderate to severe lines. When necessary, your injector can adjust the dosage to achieve the desired result.

How Long Do You Want Your Results to Last?

One final consideration when choosing an injectable is the duration of the results. With Botox, results tend to last about three to four months until the muscles mobilize again, which allows lines to reappear. Juvéderm and Restylane’s results tend to last about six to eight months or more, while Sculptra can be effective for up to two years, depending on where it is injected. For any kind of injectable treatment, periodic touchups are necessary to maintain the results indefinitely.
