4 Reasons to Have Cosmetic Mole Removal for Clearer Skin

Posted on: April 18th, 2022 by Dr. Christopher Crosby

While the doctors at Grossmont Dermatology Medical Clinic do remove many moles to conduct a biopsy, not all moles need to be suspicious or potentially harmful to your health to warrant removal. Some of our patients request mole removal for cosmetic purposes, knowing they can trust our experts to do so in a way that is aesthetically pleasing and leaves minimal scarring. This blog features reasons you may choose to undergo this quick procedure.

You Believe It’s Too Prominent

The location of a mole can alter your opinion about it. For example, having a mole on your leg may not feel like a big deal, but having it on your face may make it more visible than you would like. When your mole stands out as a defining feature, you may prefer to have it removed to direct more attention to your other physical assets.

It Gets in the Way

Some moles are inconveniently located in areas where clothing or jewelry naturally rest against the body, causing discomfort. If a mole rests where a necklace or bracelet may accidentally snag it, you can avoid inevitable scratching and bleeding by having the mole removed.

It Makes You Self-Conscious

Insecurities can arise for any number of reasons, not all of which must be logical. If a mole leaves you feeling less attractive, you can either find a way to learn to accept this difference about yourself, or simply have it removed to get past this specific problem. Granted, a cosmetic procedure rarely addresses the root of your insecurities, but it can become one less thing you have to fixate on.

To Avoid a Future Cancer Scare

While most skin cancer is spotted by way of a new mole or change to the skin, about 30% of cases are found on lifelong moles that eventually change in size, color or shape. Most moles remain benign indefinitely, so our doctors do not suggest removing random, longstanding moles out of extreme precaution. Nonetheless, if you are interested in removing the mole for aesthetic reasons and want a further justification for doing so, it is possible that removing a mole could decrease your risk for melanoma very, very slightly. Tissue removed is always sent for testing, even if the mole is suspected to be benign.

Make an Appointment

Ultimately, your reasons for cosmetic mole removal are personal — so long as our doctors believe they can do it safely and effectively (which is the case for most patients), you are probably a good candidate for this procedure.
